Summary:
The Staff Firmware Engineer will be able to technically manage all aspects of local and cloud connectivity system designs for company products. He/She will be responsible for identifying and managing product development needs and documenting new processes in system design. This position will require the Staff Engineer to be responsible for all interactions of the components within the system. The staff engineer will be specifically involved in the design and development of new control algorithms and system testing both in the lab and on real products.

Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with product management to understand business cases, associated requirements, and definition of the technical roadmap to align with business needs.
  • Generate solution level requirements and supporting design documents
  • Work closely with our development teams to translate research learnings to product development
  • Assess technical feasibility of new designs and create examples, simulations, and papers as necessary to support findings
  • Communicate requirements and system designs to development groups and validate successful handoff
  • Provide new product development support, specific to connectivity systems design in the Industrial, Commercial, Residential, and/or Retail generator or Power Tool product area
  • Design of new end to end control algorithms across multiple components of the system
  • Negotiate system requirements with technical leads from other teams such as mobile software, local hardware, and firmware, and the remote server platform
  • Collaborates across multiple product development groups to design solutions that meet market requirements
  • Create work breakdown structures, estimate the work, and help distribute work items to a team of firmware developers
  • Review and approve firmware pull requests
  • Work with vendors, outsourced engineering partners, and strategic development partners to supplement development of IoT products, protocols, and system design
  • Create automated test strategies for new system and software
  • Create Multiphysics simulations of systems to verify the integrity of proposed solutions
  • Utilizes simulation tools
  • Troubleshoot designs to the component level
  • Establish and demonstrate compliance to end to end system performance criteria
  • Develop or update formal specifications and standards as necessary to define system interfaces
  • Proactively train, coach, and mentor less experienced Engineers
  • Participate in design reviews

Minimal Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or directly related Engineering degree
  • 7 years of experience with embedded firmware development 
  • Experience with cellular networking systems and MVNO operations 

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience decomposing industry requirements into systems requirements 
  • Proficient in creating engineering documents: system designs, interface control documents, requirements specifications, etc. 
  • Experience maneuvering around design challenges related to IoT such as security, cellular services, RF performance, and communication networks 
  • Proficient in C and C++
  • Experience with writing system design requirements and applying them to multiple components of the system strong analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Highly collaborative, with excellent written and verbal communications skills, ability to tailor methods of communication to communicate with a variety of very smart/talented people across the organization 
  • Conflict management skills 
  • Experience providing technical guidance and mentorship to product development team

  • Ability to perform detail orientated work with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to translate technical information to all audiences 
  • Expert level understanding and knowledge of engineering principles 
  • Able to solve intermediate engineering problems; good decision-making skills 
  • Expert level of knowledge of communication protocols/hardware interface
  • Expert level ability to write test firmware to test hardware designs
  • Expert ability to use FMEA/DFMEA tools to meet agency compliance
